News & Notes December 2002Project Grass Holds First Annual Grazing Conference The Pennsylvania grazing partnership effort, Project Grass, held its first statewide grazing conference, November 19-20, 2002. The partnership is composed of producers, local, state, federal, private and non-profit entities with an interest in improving the economic viability and environmental quality of livestock operations through the promotion of grazing. Over 100 people traveled to State College, PA, to attend the conference, to recognize the recent statewide expansion of Project Grass and to develop a plan for the future. The Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts, Inc. (PACD), was one of the agencies providing financial support to the conference. PACD Information Specialist Chuck Rohrer represented PACD on a panel of cooperating agencies involved with Project Grass. PACD also set up an exhibit and provided literature to the audience. During the breakout sessions, PACD staff participated in the Public Relations session, hosted by Joanne Nardone of the Department of Environmental Protection. Members of the smaller groups brain-stormed strategies for promoting Project Grass and the practice of rotational grazing. Event organizers were grateful for the contributions made to Project Grass by each agency and asked how they could enhance the relationship with these partners and help the program to continue to pick up speed. For a number of attendees, this conference provided their first glimpse of what Project Grass is about.
