Looking Forward to the Fall Meeting
If you haven't registered for the PACD Fall Meeting,
do so now. The registration deadline is Monday, October 20. Registration
forms are available on the PACD website, www.pacd.org.
The PACD Fall Meeting will include the regular PACD meeting activities
such as the issues forum which will cover nutrient trading, water
resource planning, the farm bill and the PA Biodiversity Partnership.
The meeting will also include the State Conservation Commission meeting,
Watershed Specialist training and the PACD Education Forum.
What is the Education Forum and why is it necessary?
Recently, conservation districts have been called upon to expand the
scope of their educational offerings to meet common needs statewide,
while still meeting unique needs locally. Because of this increased
demand, PACD leaders have realized the need to develop a comprehensive
strategic plan to ensure that districts are being adequately supported
in their education efforts.
Supported by a grant from the Canaan Valley Institute, the PACD will
develop this plan with input from two main sources: a survey of all
Pennsylvania conservation districts and the Education Forum.
The forum will be led by an outside facilitator and will provide the
opportunity for district representatives to share in person important
information and ideas about conservation education in their areas.
This input, together with the survey data, will become the foundation
of the education strategic plan.
PACD invites two representatives from each conservation district to
participate in the PACD Education Forum, Friday, October 31, from
8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
PACD staff are excited about the variety of directors and staff that
will be attending the fall meeting. Don't miss out on this unique
opportunity to meet and mingle with others working toward conservation
goals in Pennsylvania. Register today.
PACD Region Meetings
PACD's region meetings were held throughout the state
in the second half of September. One of the orders of business was
the election of new Region Directors. These positions have two-year
terms and are elected in odd-numbered years.
The purpose of the PACD Region Directors is to act as a liaison for
communicating regional issues and policies of districts in each region
to the PACD Executive Board and to serve as an extension of the association
to its members.
The Region Director attends all PACD Executive Council meetings and
meetings of the PACD Executive Board at statewide PACD conferences.
The Region Director also attends the District Board meeting of one-half
of the conservation districts in the Region during the first year
of his/her term and the District Board meetings of the other one-half
of the conservation districts during the second year of his/her term.
The election results are as follows:
South Central: Donald Bashore, Juniata Conservation District
North East: Robert Robinson, Wyoming Conservation District
South East: Harold Kulp, Chester Conservation District
Central: Robert Ritchey, Cambria Conservation District
South West: Bill Slosky, Washington Conservation District
North West: Porter Duvall, Jefferson Conservation District
North Central: George Hildenbrandt, Centre Conservation District
Another major order of business at the region meetings
was to provide input for PACD's strategic plan. See
the strategic planning article for more information.
