Ohio River Basin Initiative Update
By Jarrett Miller
The NACD is organizing an effort for the Ohio River Basin by facilitating
discussions between representatives of the six states within the Basin.
The goal of this cooperative effort between states and agencies is to
make technical and financial assistance available through the Conservation
Districts and Resource Conservation and Development Areas, meeting the
need to improve water quality, protect the resource base, and provide
for economic development through utilization of natural resources.
With NACD staff Christa Jones serving as facilitator, the first meeting
of the NACD Ohio River Basin Initiative was held on Tuesday, November
25th at the Boone County Conservation District office in Burlington,
Kentucky. Representatives from the Ohio River Basin states of Illinois,
Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia attended. Pennsylvania
was represented by Jarrett Miller, PACD President and Ron Rohall, PACD
Past-president and Chairman of Pennsylvania's Ohio Region Water Resource
Committee. Representatives from Tennessee were unable to attend.
Each state had the opportunity to share their resource concerns and
help determine expectations for improved water quality, habitat, and
quality of life across the Ohio River Basin Region. The next meeting
will be held during NACD's annual meeting in February, followed by an
April meeting in the Cincinnati area.
