For over 20 years, the PACD has secured grants to help
support the educational efforts of county conservation districts.
For instance, with funding provided by the PA Chesapeake Bay Program
and the EPA Section 319 Program, PACD administers two Educational
Mini-grant Programs. The programs provide conservation districts with
up to $2,500 for Chesapeake Bay or general Nonpoint Source Pollution
(NPS) educational activities.
In June, PACD awarded over $100,000 for fifty-four conservation district
education projects. The projects address a variety of topics including
agriculture, community conservation, stormwater management, and watershed
education. Fran Koch and Cedric Karper, from the Pennsylvania Department
of Environmental Protection (DEP), are strong advocates of the mini-grant
programs.
"The mini-grants provide necessary funds to create an event,
to share ideas, check out BMPs, or effectively communicate innovative
nonpoint source (NPs) pollution solutions. Posting the mini-grant
products on PACD's website also facilitates the transfer of information
garnered from the mini-grants and enables others to customize the
products for use in their county. The mini-grants are an efficient,
effective method to support the local grassroots ideas for outreach
and education on NPs pollution solutions," said Fran Koch, Chief
of the NPs Implementation Unit, DEP.
"Interest in the mini-grant program remains high. The projects
funded through these grants are important to support outreach and
education activities in the Bay Program. Mini-grants represent small
investments that can make a big difference in conservation practices
and environmental protection," said Cedric Karper, Chief, Division
of Conservation Districts and Nutrient Management, DEP.
Once mini-grant projects are completed, PACD posts the final products
of many on its website. Other districts may then adapt these publications
or presentations for use in their own counties. This past year's projects
were amazing for the depth of content, utility, and professional quality.
