Participants in the Susquehanna River Celebration explore their creative side with fish printing. Using paint and a brush, works of art are created using life-like rubber replicas of fish and other critters living in or around the river.

The River Celebration's theme is We All Live Downstream. Join other community members in this unique festival on water quality. Activities will include live animals, music, interactive children's programs, crafts and great food.

Scheduled activities are as follows: around the noon hour and again at 3pm join the Puppet Factory for shows that relay environmental messages in a light hearted manner; at 1:30pm join Greg Line for a live snake program; all day, national recording artist Ray Owen will be entertaining the young and young at heart with his one of a kind musical act - Animal Odyssey, which chronicles adventures in the animal kingdom; Buttons and Bows the clowns, will entertain with face painting, balloon art and children's games from Noon-4pm; and Rehabitat will be at the River Celebration all day with live birds of prey.

Other activities include the BugMobile, a traveling, interactive exhibit designed to increase public awareness on minimizing the effects of pesticides on human health and the environment. Also, Bobby Rahal Honda will bring the popular 4-door Honda Civic Hybrid to the Celebration for participants to see and learn about the vehicle's energy saving features. Throughout the day Otto the Otter, the clean water mascot, will mingle with the crowd. And the Turkey Hill Turkey will hand out prizes for youth.

Dozens of exhibitors will be on hand sharing practical tips on water quality. A sampling of these follows. Animals that are indicators of water quality such as Butterflies from Butterfly Haven and macroinvertebrates from the Stroud Water Research Center will be on display. The Pennsylvania Game Commission will be on hand talking about river wildlife and making wildlife stickers with children. The Department of Environmental Protection will offer opportunities to learn about composting and waste reduction. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resource Conservation Service will have an interactive children's exhibit with touchy feely boxes-a special sensory experience. Join staff from the U.S. Geological Survey in making 'an edible aquifer.' Dauphin County Conservation District will bring an enviroscape model to demonstrate how pollution enters our waterways. Finally, the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art will lead nature journaling activities with attendees.

While protecting the river and other water resources, we need to protect ourselves too. Be sure to visit the Department of Health's booth during the River Celebration for valuable information on sun safety.

Ten local craft vendors will be on hand offering furniture, jewelry, aromatherapy products and wildlife art. Butterfly Haven will also have wildlife merchandise on sale during the celebration. Pick up gifts for those summer birthdays, weddings and anniversaries while you are at the River Celebration. Or if you want to see crafts being made, attend the craft demonstrations, such as colonial papermaking and flax linen demonstrations.

With so much to see and do you'll want some refreshment throughout the day. The River Celebration features a concession area offering a number of tasty treats. Funnel cakes, sausage and steak sandwiches are available, along with iced tea and fresh-squeezed lemonade.

Games for the kids, exhibits, music, crafts, good food…what better way to spend quality family time than during the Susquehanna River Celebration? Mark your calendar today! For more information call (717) 238-PACD (7223).
