Rain Barrel Workshop
The district will hold a workshop to educate residents about the impact of stormwater on a watershed and to promote the use of rain barrels to capture rainwater and save it for later use. Participants will construct their own rain barrels during the workshop.
Note: The district had overwhelming interest in this workshop when it first ran in May 2003.

Marsh Creek Riparian Education Project
A recent assessment of the Marsh Creek Watershed identified mismanagement of riparian areas as a contributor to stream channel impairments. The district will develop a flyer about the benefits of riparian buffers and proper buffer management techniques for residents living within the watershed's riparian areas.

Watershed Education Project

Chesapeake Bay Watershed Study of Freshwater Mussels: Part II
High school students will continue stream monitoring projects on Shober's Run, a local trout stream that empties into the Juniata River. They also will conduct a river assessment, map their watershed, and conduct studies of freshwater mussels, an endangered animal group. Student will develop informational pamphlets about the importance of water quality.

Bedford County Watershed Forum
This annual event brings together local environmental groups to promote cooperation for resource management. This year the forum focus will be a "Grants Fair" with presentations and displays from various granting organizations, and displays from firms that conduct watershed assessments. The goal is to enhance the ability of small watershed groups to obtain resources to implement stream and watershed improvement projects.

The Sideling Hill and Town Creek Watershed Outreach Project: Promoting Our Watersheds
This display will be designed to reach different audiences with different messages. One design will be tailored to the watershed community in general and will introduce them to water quality issues and Ridge Valley Streamkeepers' work. Design two will target local decision-makers (i.e. township supervisors) to help them understand the water quality data available to them to aid their decision-making. The third design will be geared for scientific and technical audiences.

Enhancing Watershed Forests
In November, the association will hold a regional conference to raise awareness among landowners, professionals, woodland harvesters and watershed organizations about the function of forests in watershed hydrology, land use benefits of forests, the interdependence of forest and stream ecology and best management practices related to forests and stormwater runoff and water quality. This project will include development of the conference brochure and promotional mailings.

Bentley Creek Natural Stream Restoration Brochure
The association will develop a brochure highlighting the Bentley Creek Restoration Project. Encompassing over five miles of stream, this restoration is the largest of its kind in Pennsylvania, including a natural stream design approach and a watershed stormwater and riparian management plan. Because of its comprehensive approach to stream channel restoration, the project attracts numerous visitors.

The collaborative offers opportunities for students and teachers to attend workshops/seminars on environmental issues each year. The content of these sessions supports Pennsylvania academic standards for environment and ecology. During this year's workshops, participants will conduct a variety of hands-on, inquiry-based learning activities that focus on nonpoint source pollution of groundwater and prevention practices. Teachers and students will develop plans for surveying and helping to reduce nonpoint source pollution in their communities. The goal is to raise awareness among attendees and those with whom they share what they've learned.

Fayette County Children's Water Festival
This one-day educational event for students will feature hands-on classroom exercises and keynote presentations through which students will learn about the importance of water to all life, the link between water, plants, animals, and soil, and the effects of human activities on water. To prepare participants, a pre-festival program will be presented to all classes. This program provides basic information on water, the water cycle, and protecting water quality.

Dunkard Creek Sustainable Forestry Demonstration Project
Working with several partners, Sustaining Greene County will establish a woodland management demonstration area featuring five different sustainable forestry plots. The project will include an outdoor classroom for farmers, landowners, students, and other visitors.

Aquatic Resources Study Kit
The district will develop an aquatic resources program available free of charge to all students and groups in Huntingdon County. The program can be adapted to any grade level and will be administered by district staff. The program will include a new Aquatic Resource Study Kit, designed by the district to educate students using a hand-on approach. The kit will include printed information (flash cards and other items) and materials to enable macroinvertebrate sampling and chemical testing of water.

Fugitive Tire Program - Spring 2004
The program elicits volunteer youth groups to remove improperly disposed of tires from sites throughout the county and turn them in for proper disposal/recycling. Lawrence County Watershed Partnership

While each organization maintains its unique mission, the partnership will reach a larger audience, lead to greater public awareness and education, and reduce duplication of effort.

Lebanon Lancaster County Watershed Forum
A joint effort between two conservation districts, the Watershed Forum will provide an educational and networking opportunity for a two-county area. Open to individuals, organizations, municipalities and others interested in watershed enhancement, the forum will cover topics including, but not limited to, wellhead protection, watershed assessments, stormwater management, and invasive plants. Forum participants also will be invited to exhibit their organization's materials.
Note: Both counties held individual forums last year. At each, participants expressed interest in a joint program; this project addresses that interest.

Wetland Restoration/Enhancement

Dead Bird Composting Recipe Sign and Thermometers

Lake-Noxen Elementary School K-3 Learning Support Project Give
Elementary students will undertake several service learning projects that illustrate to the community how a person's actions at home can have a positive impact "downstream." The students will create a habitat restoration nursery of erosion controlling plants on school grounds. They will distribute handouts and plants at local events, and they will create a display for the statewide service learning conference that will encourage others to replicate this project.

Stormwater Management Education -- -BMP Location and Effects
This project will inventory existing stormwater best management practices (BMPs) and implement a strategy to educate municipalities, landowners, and others about "the changing face" of stormwater management. The project will begin with two impaired streams and will serve as a model for a county-wide inventory. The district, with project partners, will hold workshops in the areas studied to explain how specific problems from stormwater pollution affect the community and to identify specific sites as priorities for restoration.

Reducing the Misuse of Pesticides and Nonpoint Source Pollution via Innovative Public Education
The BugMobile is a traveling, real-time "talking" Volkswagen Bug painted like a ladybug. This interactive exhibit raises public awareness of integrated pest management and ways to minimize the effects of pesticides on humans and the environment. This project will expand "The BugMobile" program through development of new materials and display elements specifically to meet the need for urban/suburban nonpoint source pollution prevention education.
