Connecting Bedford County to the Chesapeake Bay: Biology
and Watershed Education Projects
This multi-faceted project started with students monitoring
local water quality, documenting water pollution problems
and solutions, sharing information during an environmental
field day, and studying marine organisms to understand their
role in nature and in genetic engineering.

Water Quality Monitoring and Education Program
In cooperation with three area school districts and the Wiconisco
Creek Restoration Association, the Dauphin County Conservation
District provide water quality training, established monitoring
practices, collected data, and provided educational events
that all worked to improve the health of the Wiconisco Creek,
a tributary of the Susquehanna River.

South Branch of the Tunkhannock Creek Watershed Education
and Outreach Project
This project introduced residents to the watershed through
an informational brochure and display, plus hands-on activities
such as water monitoring. The goal was to raise awareness
of the watershed and encourage residents to protect water
resources.

Water Quality Education Program
Northumberland County Conservation District has expanded its
Water Quality Education Program, offered to schools within
the county. The expansion provided the opportunity for students
in grades 5-10 to learn water quality testing. The program
provided students with an understanding of the importance
of water quality, as well as an understanding of point and
nonpoint source pollution and how they affect the health of
a stream.
