By showcasing a local farm that has improved soil conservation and water

Solar-Powered Pasture Watering System Demonstration Project
This project encourages farmers to use streambank fencing and rotational
grazing methods. It features a "low-cost" watering system
powered by a solar panel which charges a marine battery that in turn
runs the bilge pump. A pipeline conveys the water from the stream to
the drinking trough.

Meeting Your Nutrient Needs with Manure
The field day educated participants about manure application rates,
focusing on using soil tests to balance the nutrient levels already
in the soils with the nutrients levels needed for crop growth. The district
also will continue to distribute nutrient management tracking binders
for Indiana County farmers with an approved nutrient management plan.

Farmer NPS Awareness
The district used the software with its Geographical Positioning Device
to give quick and accurate information to farmers, demonstrating how
stream buffers can work on their individual lands. The short-term goal
was to increase protected acres of streamside buffers and wetlands;
the long-term goal is to gather and maintain data of the protected lands
for inspection, maintenance and monitoring of conservation practices.

Lancaster County Conservation Exposition
The goal of this event is to educate peoples about watersheds and how
their actions affect other people down stream. Many topics such as nutrient
management, soil conservation, water testing for nitrates, stream studies
and GIS are highlighted. Programs for students, homeowners, gardeners,
farmers, and construction companies are part of the Exposition. Nutrient
Management is the particular focus of this event.

Agricultural Field Day
The Conservation District 2000 Crop Day on July 19 at the rtin Farm.
The featured keynote speaker Bob Utterback. Utterback is an agricultural
economist for Farm Journal magazine. His presentations focused on the
agricultural economy in the United States and where it is going, and
on risk management for agriculture. Grant monies were used to develop
a brochure and poster to advertise the event.

Dead Bird Composting Recipe Sign and Thermometers
Composting instructions and other tools will be distributed to poultry
producers in a multi-county area. Better educating producers and farm
visitors about composting will lead to better management of the process
and ultimately to less polluted runoff in the water.
